Clues about what I'm interested in: the artists I've come across that excite or interest me, they're all from music backgrounds!
Overall performance and fluid use of technology without getting stuck behind it:
- Laurie Anderson
Looking at retrospective texts of her work, she has dipped her fingers into all sorts of interesting areas. I'll post a more thorough bit about particular pieces that interest me when I've read, listened, watched more. - Pamela Z (thanks Lucy!)
Looked at this video and went "yeah, that's essentially what I want to do!" Of course, I don't have a body synth or operatic training; and I want to consider the performance space more than projections, equipment, me. But really, amazingly inspirational stuff and very closely aligned to my interests.
Others:
- Meredith Monk (I like the fact that she started as a dancer)
- Christian Wolz (came across him when looking at descriptions of the Giving Voice festival at Center for Performance Research the end of the month)
- the "gibberish" muses from my goth past: Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) and Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins)

Hmmm still cryptic lady! hehe
Are you still going to be using video?
xx
Heh. This was part of my brain dump after the Nunnery.
I'm still using video. I had to re-read what I wrote because both Harriet and you thought this post meant I was leaving it in the dust.
No way! I love video. However, a major component of video is sound. I have been working only with the image side of things for years. Time to re-integrate the sound. This isn't a new thought for me. It's why I started doing the singing in the first place; but something crystallized for me after the Nunnery.
Who knows. Maybe after the MA, I'll end up making some sound installations. For now, solo performance, interacting with live video, and with a strong sonic dimension is what I'm going for.
Ahh I see! I think that the sound will be really interesting. I love sound and worked with it briefly (very briefly and with no technology in sight) during my BA. I took away the visuals and did a performance behind a black curtain because I wanted the audience to work.
The hope was that they would all see different versions of the performance in their minds eye and have a more active role in contributing to the meaning of the work. It is still an idea that I'd love to play with.
I can see what you mean about now adding in the sound dimention to your work.
